About Southern Leighton Buzzard

In December 2007, planning consent was granted for 1,330 new residential dwellings, to be located along Billington Road. This forms part of the Southern Leighton Buzzard Urban Extension Area which also includes approximately 950 dwellings within the existing Sandhills development.

In view of the amount of growth in car trips over the past 20 years and as a result the increase in the amount of congestion throughout the UK; plus the increasing importance of lowering carbon emissions associated with private car use, the government is seeking to raise awareness of the impact that personal travel decisions can have on the local environment. This is achieved through the widespread promotion of Travel Plans.

The Travel Plan, developed and agreed in partnership with Central Bedfordshire Council for Southern Leighton Buzzard, identifies a range of targets and measures to promote the use of sustainable travel modes for residents of the development to consider; with particular emphasis on encouraging a shift away from private car use where this can be realistically achieved.

Additional initiatives will build on the package of measures agreed between the developers (Arnold White Estates Ltd) and Central Bedfordshire Council (previously Bedfordshire County Council and South Bedfordshire District Council). To help deliver these measures, a Steering Group consisting of the following organisations has been set up:
